Cory Everson Turns 50!

I first met Cory Everson in 1990 at a bodybuilding camp in Los Angeles, California, where she was a guest speaker. I still have the detailed notes that I took from her presentation. In the same year, I saw her T.V. show, Bodyshaping, on ESPN. I was hooked by her fun, friendly teaching style. While she taught the mechanics of weight training and exercise, she also entertained the audience. As a result, her zestful approach attracted thousands of couch potatoes to the gym and motivated those already in progress. Bodyshaping inspired their dedicated audience for eight years and I have to admit that I arranged my personal training clients around the show. I intentionally scheduled the cardio segment of their workouts to match the air time of the show, so that we (clients and I) could watch. Thankfully, my clients were avid fans also.

Making Chocolate Your Friend

CHOCOLATE IS MY FRIEND DURING THE HOLIDAYS
By Babs Hogan

As of today, we have thirty days until Christmas and thirty-six days to plan our New Year’s resolutions. Most of us are focused on what Santa will put under the tree…will it be a new iPod? Jewelry? HD DVD player? Only a handful of us have considered setting health goals for 2008 and fewer have written them down. As sugarplums dance in our heads, 2008 seems so far away. So how do we get pass overindulging during the holidays?

What Stage Are You In?

DON’T SKIP STAGES FOR LASTING CHANGE

For many years, personal training has been my main profession. Throughout each year, I continually asked: “How do people really change?” My efforts to help clients find their own path to lifetime wellness did not always last. Most of the changes lasted only during the time spent training with me. As soon as the sessions stopped, old habits would resume and the failure cycle would start over again. Watching this process was always frustrating because for the longest time, I could not find the missing link.

New Resistance Training

NEW RESISTANCE TRAINING PROGRAM
- NOT FOUND IN GYMS -

A new type of resistance training is aimed at dieters, and you won’t find it in fitness magazines or exercise-related publications. You’ll find it in a new book, “The Beck Diet Solution,” by psychologist Judith Beck. Dr. Beck focuses on the psychology of permanent weight loss. Her mental approach to dieting is centered on changing your self-dialog regarding food and eating. By changing the way you talk to yourself when confronted with hunger, cravings, or tempting dishes of food, you can change the behavior that follows. The underlying theme of the book: strengthen your “resistance” muscles (ability to resist temptation) and weaken your “giving-in” muscles. In other words, strengthen your inner “motivating, championing voice” and weaken your inner “sabotaging voice.”

OverTraining: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Introduction

As a former competitive swimmer, I am intimately familiar with the concept of “more is better.” I am among the ranks of thousands of swimmers who trained 4,000 to10, 000 meters per day, depending on the time of the season. In addition to swimming, we ran bleachers at the stadium, lifted weights, and ran three miles twice a week during the off season.
